Why Elevator Testing Matters

Code-Required Elevator Testing

Category 1 (Annual) Testing

Category 1 testing is performed annually and focuses on general system operation. These tests are completed without full rated load (no-load testing) and include verification of controls, door operation, and standard functions.

Category 5 (Load) Testing

Category 5 testing is performed at defined multi-year intervals and evaluates elevator performance under full rated load conditions. This confirms the system can operate safely at its designed capacity.

Safety Device Testing

Certain procedures focus specifically on the elevator safety device (emergency brake). These tests verify that the system activates and stops the car under overspeed conditions in a controlled environment.

Some equipment types, including rack and pinion elevators, require additional procedures such as drop testing to verify safety device performance. Safety devices are also subject to defined service life limits, often around four years, after which replacement is required to remain compliant.

Witnessed Inspections

Many tests must be completed in the presence of a state inspector or third party. Murphy Elevator coordinates these inspections, prepares the system, and ensures all required procedures are completed correctly.
