Problem

Read Residence Hall was dated compared to many of the newer dormitories on campus. The projects focus was to improve student safety and living conditions within Read. New accessible student rooms were added and this required a new elevator. This elevator had to be installed in the middle of an existing occupied building this created unique challenges.

Our Solution

Murphy installed a brand new custom Machine-Room-Less (MRL) elevator. These types of elevators do not require a penthouse at the top and is perfect for this type of job with big size and overhead constraints. Furthermore, this elevator had to be cornerpost design due to the the requirement for a side opening. Typically, elevator rails are on the sides centered on the left and right side of the elevator. Since this elevator has a front and side opening, the rails had to be moved to the corners. The creates challenges with the routing of the elevator cables and counterweights.
